• A decollate snail's shell grows in a spiral, but at some point in its life, the tip simply snaps off — and the snail survives. This isn't injury or disease; it's deliberate. The snail reabsorbs the tip of its own shell to seal the opening, leaving behind a flat-topped cone that looks like someone took a hacksaw to it. Scientists still debate why, though the leading theory is that it reduces weight as the animal ages, making climbing and water conservation more efficient in dry climates.
• Garden snails cannot fight back. When a decollate snail encounters one, it uses its radula — a ribbon of thousands of tiny teeth — to rasp away at the victim's shell, boring a hole from the outside. It then liquefies the snail's body inside and drinks it through the opening like a grotesque smoothie. A single decollate has been observed consuming 10 garden snails in a single night, making them a farmer's most useful mollusc predator.
• The decollate snail's hunting behaviour is so effective that it was deliberately introduced to California in 1822 and again in the 1970s as a biological control for invasive garden snails plaguing orchards and vineyards. What worked as a solution in Europe became a ecological wildcard in North America — the snails adapted so well they began hunting native snail species too, with unknown long-term consequences still unfolding today.
• Decollate snails are born pregnant. They are simultaneous hermaphrodites — each individual carries both male and female organs — but they cannot self-fertilise. During mating, two snails exchange sperm packets, and both leave the encounter pregnant with the genetic contribution of their partner. A single snail can then deposit up to 70 eggs in a year, allowing populations to explode across suitable habitat in months.
• In the Sonoran Desert, decollate snails shelter in crevices during scorching days and emerge only at night to hunt. Their shell's dark pigmentation absorbs less heat than lighter snails, but their real survival hack is behavioural: they plug their shell opening with a mucus seal called an epiphragm that locks in moisture. This adaptation lets them survive in environments where most snails would desiccate in hours, making them one of the few gastropods that can thrive in genuine arid scrubland.
