• When it reaches adult size the snail chews off the tip of its own shell, leaving a blunt, truncated cone. The shell normally grows to about 40-45 mm long and 14 mm wide before this behaviour begins. The animal rubs its body against hard surfaces, grinding or chipping off the apex. This self-decapitation gives the shell its characteristic tapering, blunt end.
• The decollate snail eats plant matter but is a generalist predator that feeds without discrimination, and its appetite has been linked to the collapse of native snails and beneficial earthworms. It will readily consume common garden snails, slugs and even their eggs, hunting them on the ground and in leaf litter. Plant material is also taken, making it an opportunistic feeder.
• An adult decollate snail can lay as many as 500 eggs over its lifetime, each deposited singly in the soil. Sexual maturity is reached at roughly ten months, after which the snail begins reproducing. The solitary eggs develop in the ground and hatch after a period of ten to forty-five days, depending on conditions. This reproductive output helps the species spread rapidly in new habitats.
• The decollate snail can survive periods of drought and low temperatures by moving far beneath the surface. When conditions are dry or cold it digs deep into the soil, where the stable environment protects it until favourable weather returns. This behaviour is complemented by its nocturnal habits, as the snail becomes most active at night and during rainfall, emerging to feed and move about.
• Human beings have deliberately moved the decollate snail to North America to curb another pest. It was released in locations such as Fresno in California and the Phoenix and Glendale areas of Arizona, where it was hoped to suppress brown garden snail populations. The introductions were carried out specifically as a biological control measure, aiming to limit the spread of the target species.
