• As a member of the flower-spider group, the northern crab spider hides among blossoms that match its own colouration, waiting for insects to come close. It typically ambushes the bees and flies that visit those flowers, using its camouflage to remain unseen until the prey lands. Its range spans North and Central America as well as the Caribbean, giving it many floral habitats to exploit.
• Mecaphesa asperata is a much smaller nearctic relative of the well-known Goldenrod Spider, Misumena vatia. Both belong to crab spiders, but this species is notably diminutive compared with its golden-rod counterpart.
• The species was originally placed in a different genus, carrying the name Misumenops asperatus before taxonomists reassigned it to Mecaphesa. This earlier classification is recorded in older literature and highlights how scientific understanding of spider relationships has evolved. The name change preserves the historical record of its former placement.
• Its carapace, abdomen and legs are densely covered with numerous short, stiff spines, a feature that clearly separates it from the related genera Misumenoides and Misumena. The spider's ocular region is white, adding a contrasting patch to its otherwise spiny surface. Along the front half of the abdomen, red streaks run laterally, while the rear half bears a mottled brown-to-red-brown V-shaped mark that points toward the posterior end.
• All its legs are yellow, except the tibia and metatarsus of the first pair, which bear striking red annuli. The red rings are the only coloured segments on the limbs.
