• Adult Compton tortoiseshells can live 10 months—longer than almost any other butterfly on the continent. They overwinter as fully formed adults tucked inside tree bark, their bodies flooding with antifreeze-like compounds that keep them alive through temperatures that would kill most insects. Come spring, they emerge to mate and lay eggs, then die, having survived two seasons.
• The caterpillars feed almost exclusively on willow and poplar leaves, and the adults have a peculiar thirst: they're drawn to tree sap, damp soil, and animal dung rather than flowers.
