• A butterfly that sees in ultraviolet but goes blind in bright sun. The common wood-nymph has two kinds of eyes — compound eyes that detect UV patterns invisible to us, and simple eyes called ocelli on the back of its head that track the sun's position. In full daylight, it retreats to shadows because its vision actually deteriorates in glare, making it a creature of dappled forest edges and dawn.
• Males spend their entire adult lives patrolling the same 50-metre stretch of ground, flying the identical route thousands of times. A single male wood-nymph will traverse his territory up to 200 times per day for months, watching for females. If a female lands, he recognizes her in 0.3 seconds — faster than you can blink — and pursues. He never abandons his patch, even when predators arrive.
• Their caterpillars eat only grass at night, hiding motionless by day for three weeks. A wood-nymph larva will spend its entire development eating nothing but grasses (Poaceae family), and it does so exclusively under cover of darkness. During daylight it doesn't move, doesn't feed, doesn't risk exposure — a strategy so reliable that the species has thrived across North America for millions of years without needing to diversify its diet.
• The brown eyespot on each wing is not an eye but a deception that works on birds. Those circular markings with a white pupil are called eyespots, and when a predator strikes, it typically aims for what looks like an eye. The butterfly survives with a torn wing edge instead of a shredded body. Some individuals bear fresh bite marks on their eyespots — evidence the bluff worked that very day.
• Adult wood-nymphs never visit flowers, living entirely on tree sap, rotting fruit, and animal dung for three months. A common wood-nymph will land on a piece of old deer droppings and sip minerals — sodium and amino acids that flowers can't provide. This diet frees them from competing with thousands of other butterfly species and keeps them tethered to shaded woodlands rather than sunny meadows.
