• A boy sparked a reptile invasion: around 1950 a boy named George Rau released about 10 wall lizards near Cincinnati, and genetic testing shows only three survived to found the population. Those three endured an extreme bottleneck yet the lizards have reproduced exponentially, now spreading across the Ohio River basin and being protected by state law. This shows how a tiny founder group can launch a lasting, naturalized species in a new continent.
• Male wall lizards sport femoral glands that secrete a waxy blend rich in α-tocopherol, especially in red morphs. This antioxidant slows oxidation, letting scent marks linger longer in humid spots, which helps territorial males defend their area for extended periods.
• Red and yellow-red wall lizards are the most vulnerable to the haemogregarine parasite, while white morphs show the strongest resistance and yellow morphs sit in the middle. These infection patterns line up with trade-offs: orange (red) morphs grow larger and fight harder but pay with higher parasite loads, whereas white morphs stay smaller but enjoy tougher immune defenses. This balance keeps all six colour types alive in shifting environments.
• Female wall lizards adopt different reproductive tactics by colour. Yellow females act as r-strategists, laying many tiny eggs, while white females are K-strategists, producing fewer but larger eggs that survive better in harsh, competitive spots. Red females can switch between r and K depending on conditions.
• The common wall lizard can stretch to roughly 20 cm (7.9 in) from snout to tail tip, making it about the length of a standard ruler. Its eggs start tiny, about 11 × 7 mm and weigh 0.29 g, but can swell to 16 × 10 mm and a gram as they absorb water.
