Fascinating facts about the Colossal Squid

• A colossal squid's eye is the size of a dinner plate — 27 centimetres across, the largest eye of any animal alive. Each eye has a lens the width of a human fist and sits in a socket that glows. Scientists believe this massive eye evolved to track the silhouettes of sperm whales hunting in the midnight zone 2,000 metres below the surface, where even moonlight never reaches.
• Instead of suckers, colossal squid have rotating hooks made of chitin — the same stuff as insect exoskeletons — arranged in spirals along their arms. When a deep-sea fish or smaller squid tries to escape, these hooks lock like a ratchet, tightening automatically. A single colossal squid can carry 25,000 hooks across its body.
• Only one colossal squid specimen has ever been found alive by humans: it was hauled up in a fishing net off Antarctica in 2007 and died within hours, its body a mangled mass from the pressure change. We know almost nothing about how they hunt, breed, or live because they die the instant we bring them to the surface — making them one of the ocean's last true mysteries.
• A colossal squid weighs as much as 10 grizzly bears — up to 750 kilograms — yet its brain-to-body-weight ratio is the lowest of any squid. Its giant eyes and hooks suggest it relies on ambush hunting rather than strategy. This hints at a creature built for one job: wait in the dark, strike when something moves, and hold on.
• Sperm whales are one of the only confirmed predators of colossal squid, and battle scars on whale bodies tell the story — circular wounds from squid hooks appear on some whales like badges, the largest rings 20 centimetres across. These two titans hunt each other in a war we've never witnessed, in waters we've barely explored, at depths where pressure would crush a car.
