• A bushbaby's leap can cover 2 metres horizontally from a standing start — that's 50 times its own body length, the equivalent of a human jumping the length of a school bus. Their ankle bones are nearly twice as long as their shin bones, creating a catapult effect that fires them through the canopy in near-silence to hunt insects mid-air.
• Their eyes are so enormous relative to body size that a bushbaby's eyeballs weigh more than its entire brain. Each eye is fixed in its socket, so they rotate their head 180 degrees to see behind them without moving their body — a predator-detection system that never blinks.
• A single bushbaby produces ultrasonic calls at frequencies up to 60 kHz, far beyond human hearing, to communicate with offspring hidden in different trees. Scientists have only recently discovered that mothers scold their babies with these high-frequency chirps; the babies respond by going silent and still, exactly like a toddler sent to their room.
• During the dry season, a bushbaby can enter torpor — a hibernation-lite state where body temperature drops by 10 degrees Celsius and heart rate plummets. This ability to pause their metabolism for days lets them survive months when insects vanish, something few other African primates can do.
• Bushbabies secrete urine and a pungent gland chemical onto their hands and feet, then walk upright on their hind legs across branches leaving scent-marked highways through the night forest. Other bushbabies read these chemical trails like messages, knowing which individuals own which hunting territories and whether they're looking to breed.
