• A male Broad Scarlet's abdomen glows blood-red in sunlight — a colour shift that happens only after he reaches sexual maturity, triggered by hormones that literally rewire his pigment cells. Females stay dull brown their whole lives. This 15-millimetre dragonfly uses colour like a neon sign: red males claim territories and warn rivals; brown females slip past without a fight.
• Broad Scarlets hunt with a turning radius of less than 10 centimetres, twisting their body mid-air by rotating their abdomen independently of their thorax while their four wings beat in different rhythms — up to 30 beats per second.
