Blind Shark

Fascinating facts about the Blind Shark

• A 1801 painting may have misled early taxonomists, because the blind shark was first described from an illustration that later scientists could not locate. This shows how historic art can still shape modern species names.
• When the tide pulls away, this shark can survive up to 18 hours out of water, letting it endure being trapped in a drying pool. Its ability to breathe on land hints at a resilience few sharks share.
• Females give birth to just 7–8 pups each summer, and the newborns are only 15–18 cm long, about the length of a school ruler. Such small litters and tiny babies make each birth a high-stakes event for the species.
• Mature males are ready to breed at under 62 cm (24 in) and females at under 66 cm (26 in), yet the species can grow to a full meter. Reaching size long after puberty illustrates a slow-and-steady growth strategy.
• Despite being called “blind,” its eyes work fine; anglers only gave the name because the shark pulls its eyeballs back and closes thick lids when lifted out of water. The myth highlights how human perception can mislabel an animal’s true abilities.
