Attwater's pocket gophers spend up to 8 hours a day tunnelling, their front teeth scraping through Texas clay at a pace that would fill a wheelbarrow in weeks.
• Attwater's pocket gophers are almost completely blind — their eyes are tiny, useless slits buried under fur. Instead they navigate their underground mazes using touch-sensitive hairs on their face and tail, feeling the tunnel walls the way a submarine captain reads sonar. They've mapped Southeast Texas in the dark for millions of years.
• A single pocket gopher can maintain a tunnel system the size of a football field — some colonies stretch across 2,000 square metres with dozens of chambers for food storage, nesting, and waste. These underground cities are so intricate that gophers can reverse direction in their tunnels without turning around, backing up with the same speed they move forward.
• Attwater's prairie, where these gophers live, has shrunk from 1.4 million hectares in the 1800s to fewer than 1,000 hectares today — a loss of 99.9 per cent.
