About the Asiatic Water Snake

The checkered keelback, Fowlea piscator, glides through Asian wetlands with a sleek, medium-sized body that can reach a snout-to-vent length of 1.75 m (5.7 ft). Its head is crowned by a small eye set farther back than the nostril, and a rostral scale that is visible from above. The dorsal scales form 19 rows, the central ones strongly keeled while the outer rows are smooth, giving the snake a subtly textured appearance. Its coloration is a masterclass in aquatic camouflage: dark spots arranged in a quincunx pattern interlaced with a whitish network, or bold black longitudinal bands on a pale ground, often accented by two nearly constant oblique black streaks flanking the eye. The belly is stark white, sometimes edged with black margins, and the snake can expand its neck skin in a cobra-like hood when threatened, a surprising display for a non-venomous colubrid. By day and night this water-loving reptile patrols freshwater bodies, paddy fields, and the slow-moving streams of its extensive range, from the hills of Afghanistan to the mangroves of Indonesia. Its diet is a watery buffet of fish, amphibians, arthropods, and occasional rodents or turtle hatchlings, while the female lays a clutch of 30-70 eggs that she guards for 60-70 days before the 11 cm hatchlings emerge. In a rare twist of survival, individuals in Vietnam have been documented shedding their tails to escape predators, a dramatic autotomy seldom seen in snakes.
