Fascinating facts about the Asian Cobra

• Around 3.21 million years ago the Caspian cobra split from the line that later gave rise to the monocled and Andaman cobras, a split revealed by mitochondrial DNA. Despite the Hindu Kush mountains carving the landscape, the species shows almost no genetic differences across its range, signalling a rapid, recent expansion that let it colonise vast stretches of Central Asia in a geologically short time.
• The Caspian cobra is a medium-sized, heavy-bodied snake whose neck ribs can flare into a distinctive hood. Adults usually measure between 1 m and 1.4 m (3.3-4.6 ft), and only rarely exceed 1.7 m (5.6 ft). Its hood is elongated and tapers gradually, unlike the rounder hoods of the Indian or monocled cobras.
• The Caspian cobra inhabits the Transcaspian belt, spanning Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, southwestern Tajikistan, Afghanistan's north-east, and northeastern Iran. It thrives in arid, rocky foothills and can be found up to 3,000 m (9,800 ft) above sea level, making it the westernmost Asiatic cobra.
• Although it prefers to stay away from people, the Caspian cobra will defend itself fiercely when cornered, with even juveniles showing high aggression. It cannot spit venom, but it will spread its hood, hiss, sway side-to-side and strike repeatedly. Remarkably, it is both an adept climber and swimmer, often staying close to water sources.
