• A caterpillar that looks like bird droppings transforms into a butterfly with a 5 cm wingspan—but only if it survives the chemical war waged by its host plant. Fennel and carrot plants pump their leaves with toxic oils meant to poison herbivores. The anise swallowtail caterpillar has evolved enzymes that neutralize these poisons, then stores them in its own body as a shield against predators. A bird that eats one learns fast: the bright yellow and black stripes spell danger. This is borrowed armour, stolen from the plant itself.
• Male anise swallowtails patrol open hillsides at eye level, diving and climbing in search of females—a behaviour called hilltopping that turns a patch of California scrubland into an aerial boxing ring. Hundreds converge on the same ridge, jostling for position at elevations where warm air currents give them the edge. This gathering happens at sunset, lasts minutes, then vanishes. It's a daily high-stakes lottery where location is everything.

The butterfly is following both its food plants and the spring it depends on—a visible marker of range shift already underway. They're among the fastest-responding insects to climate change, but this speed masks a problem: the plants they need may not always keep pace.
