• A newborn Andean condor won't fly until it's almost three years old — making it one of the slowest-maturing birds on Earth. The chick stays in the nest for a full year, then depends on its parents for food for two more years while learning to hunt. By the time it leaves home, it's already larger than a golden eagle, with a 3-metre wingspan ready to harness mountain thermals that can carry it 200 kilometres in a single day without flapping once.
• Male Andean condors are covered in head-to-neck wattles and inflatable neck sacs that they puff up like balloons during courtship, a behaviour that has no parallel in any other vulture species. When a male displays, he walks stiffly with his sacs ballooned and wings half-spread — a ritual that can last hours.
