- Weighing just 200-250 g and measuring 28-35 cm from nose to tail, the American red squirrel is the size of a large mouse on a stick. Its tiny frame lets it dart through dense conifer canopies, defending a year-round exclusive territory that it fiercely guards against intruders.
- A single red-squirrel midden can spread up to 12 m (39 ft) across, forming a massive pantry of stored spruce cones that fuels the animal through winter and early spring. Each territory may hold one or several of these caches, and squirrels harvest white-spruce cones in August-September, stuffing them into the central hoard. By concentrating food in a defendable pile.
- Despite 4-5 °F (2.2-2.7 °C) warmer winters in New England over the past 50 years, American red squirrels have not moved uphill as predicted. Instead, they have shifted downslope, following the resurgence of red-spruce forests after a period of die-back.
