• When a female American lappet moth needs to find a mate, she doesn't search — she broadcasts. She releases a chemical signal (pheromone) so potent that males can detect a single molecule from over a kilometre away, flying upwind through the dark to find her. Their antennae are biological radar dishes with 40,000 sensory hairs tuned to one scent. This is evolution's most extreme dating app.
• The caterpillar's fuzzy body isn't just decoration — those long hairs bundle together to form a living insulation suit. When temperatures drop in spring, the caterpillar can cluster with siblings in a dense mat, their collective body heat raising the group temperature by 10°C above the frozen forest floor. Survival in a seasonal forest means being both social and a furnace.
• Adult lappet moths have wings that fold like envelopes, creating a roofed tent over their body that makes them nearly invisible on tree bark. The overlapping layers — called 'lappets' — scatter light in ways that break up their outline. A resting moth can sit motionless for hours, and a predator walking past will see only weathered bark.
• Female lappet moths live only 4–6 days as adults. They don't eat — their mouth is vestigial, essentially sewn shut. Their entire adult body is a reproduction capsule: they emerge, pump pheromones, mate, and die. Males live slightly longer but face the same deadline. Across a season, hundreds of generations have passed; each moth is a sprinter in a relay nobody finishes.
• The caterpillars feed so intensively on oak, willow, and birch leaves that their population booms and crashes in cycles. During outbreak years, defoliation can strip entire hillsides bare across hundreds of hectares. Then predators, parasites, and starvation crash the population. These boom-and-bust cycles mean a 'plague year' of lappets can reshape which trees dominate a forest for decades afterward.
