About the Alcon Blue

The Alcon blue (Phengaris alcon) is a striking Lycaenid butterfly that ranges from the coasts of the North Sea, Hamburg, Bremen, Belgium, through the Mediterranean and across the Palearctic to Siberia, Mongolia, the Altai, Dauria and even Tibet. Males display a deep, non-glossy blue on the dorsal wing surface, while females are black-brown dusted with dark blue near the base; the ventral side is a dark violet-grey mottled with numerous ocelli. Variants such as the darkened male form ab. nigra Wheel and the almost black female ab. cecinae Hormuz illustrate the species' remarkable colour polymorphism, while forms like rebeli Hirschke and monticola Stgr. show a more brilliant blue and reduced dark margins in alpine habitats. The butterfly favours damp meadows where its sole larval food plant, marsh gentian (Gentiana pneumonanthe), thrives, sometimes extending to willow gentian (Gentiana asclepiadea) in the Alps. Eggs are white and finely reticulated, laid directly on the gentian flowers; larvae initially feed on the plant before dropping to the ground at the fourth instar to be adopted by Myrmica ants. This myrmecophilous “cuckoo” strategy, where the caterpillar mimics ant larvae chemicals, is carried into the ant nest, and is fed by nurse ants, allows it to avoid the high mortality of predatory relatives, though it ties the butterfly to specific ant hosts such as Myrmica scabrinodis, ruginodis, rubra, sabuleti, schencki, and rarely lonae or specioides. The parasitic dance continues as some ant colonies evolve defensive chemicals, sparking an evolutionary arms race that keeps the Alcon blue’s life cycle a perpetual tug-of-war between mimic and host.
