• An African sacred ibis can probe 10 centimetres into mud without seeing what it's hunting — its beak contains sensory pits that detect the electrical signals frogs and insects generate when they move. This living metal detector lets it fish blind in turbid water where vision fails, giving it access to prey no other bird can reliably find.
• Ancient Egyptians mummified over 1.7 million sacred ibises as offerings to the god Thoth, packing entire cemeteries with wrapped birds wrapped in linen. By the 1800s, locals had hunted them to extinction across Egypt itself — the bird that once meant divinity had vanished from the Nile Valley.
